The land east of the football stadium was once used as part of the York Track and Field Events Center.
They will come if you build it. Here's the land east of Bowers Stadium shortly after groundbreaking for the baseball diamond.

Sanders Baseball Stadium

The Sanders Baseball Stadium is located on the eastern edge of campus at the intersection of Bowers Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue, situated between Bowers Stadium and the Bearkat Softball Complex.

The baseball complex seats just over 11-hundred spectators and contains additional amenities such as offices, locker rooms and lights - making it the first Bearkat baseball field to allow for night games. The season opener, rained out on February 10, was played February 11, 2006 with the Bearkats winning the first contest in the new stadium over Texas Southern 16-3; they would go on to sweep the series 3-0.

Prior to the 2006 season, Bearkat baseball was played southwest of campus at Holleman Field.

Incidentally, it was announced in the project's early stages, and in the February 2003 edition of the President's Update, that once the fields were completed that the university planned "to carry the name, Holleman Field, to the new site." This apparently didn't pan out.
