Blackwood LEMIT Center

The Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas was created in 1987 by the 70th Texas Legislature to develop the administrative and executive skills of current and future law enforcement officials. In September 1993, the Texas Legislature placed LEMIT under the control of SHSU and moved the headquarters to Huntsville; at this time the institute was renamed in honor of State Representative Bill Blackwood.

The 75th Texas Legislature (1997) called for the creation of a LEMIT headquarters in Huntsville; construction began in 1999 on a 38,000 square foot three-story building to house classrooms, meeting rooms, and offices.

The LEMIT building is located in the former north parking lot of the Criminal Justice Complex and is connected by enclosed footbridge to the University Hotel.
