Mr. Smith is the alias given the anonymous alumnus who, in 1996, donated a $1 million banking endowment to the university and a $350,000 scholarship donation in honor of his long-time business associate, Robert Hutson.
The university named the Business Administration Building in honor of both Smith and Hutson.
A 1996 Houstonian article said that Smith would allow the university to identify him only after his death. President Marks said that, “Upon his death, the university will place the portrait [of Smith] with a portrait of Hutson in the building."
