Hildreth Smith was selected as SHSU's second principal (1879-1881). He left his position as the Houston school superintendent to come to Sam Houston Normal Institute. Smith served two years in Huntsville as principal.

A stained glass window in the Memorial Hall of the Main Building was dedicated in his honor in 1955.
