Francis McCray earned his MA from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. from Harvard.
McCray became a professor of Field Corps, Agriculture professor (1920-1939) and the Head of Vocational Agriculture in 1939. His wife, Aytchie, herself a SHNI graduate, was a longtime educator in Huntsville, operating a five-story kindergarten in the vicinity of SHSU's Business Administration Building.
A small house - McCray House - was named in his honor.
