Sarah Rosalie (“Rosa”) Patten Buchanan was the head of the English Department and the first woman to become a full professor in any state school in Texas. She was married to John Creighton Buchanan (1850-1884), a Texas state senator (1878–1885).

Buchanan Hall is named in her honor.
