Anisman earned degrees from Syracuse University (A.B., English Literature) and New York University (M.A., Ph.D.).

Anisman resigned from SHSU in 1995 to serve as the fourth president of Daemen College (Amherst, NY). It was announced in February 2010 that he plans to retire in Spring 2011.
